DOMAIN SPICES UP AMERICAN KITCHEN DECOR

Home Furnishings Guru Judy George Brings Today’s Dream Kitchen to Life

September 20, 2002 - A home furnishings innovator for over 17 years, Domain founder and CEO Judy George is once again transforming the home to address today’s busy lifestyle where the kitchen has emerged as the center of family life. With Americans spending more time at home and entertaining more at home, the kitchen has edged its way to the top of the list as the most important room in the house sparking George’s passion to turn women’s dream kitchens into a reality.

“Women have told me they spend up to 80 percent of their time at home in the kitchen and want their kitchen décor to reflect their personalities just like the rest of their home,” says George. “The kitchen has become their living room and office – it’s a multipurpose area for entertaining, homework, art projects, laundry, bill paying and, of course, cooking and eating.”

Domain’s design team used its well-honed design expertise to develop a new line of European-inspired, free-standing kitchen furnishings from islands to pantries to plate racks, as well as smaller-scale upholstered groupings, offering women a complete solution for the home all in one retail location.

“As a working mother who had to balance the demands of my business with the desire to spend time with family and friends, I have always lived in my kitchen. If you look at kitchens in Europe they have been at the forefront of the trend to combine cooking and living all in one room,” says George. “Where an upholstered sofa or chair is rare in an American kitchen, they are common in Europe where you see very special furniture and occasional pieces that have been adapted to the kitchen.”

George is pairing Domain’s new kitchen furnishings with Britain’s legendary Aga range to create the ultimate kitchen environment. The Aga is the most popular, high-end cooking instrument in Europe. With features like four ovens and no waiting time for pre-heating, the Aga is perfectly suited to the American lifestyle of balancing numerous time commitments and demands while entertaining more at home. Plus with its classic design and 14 designer color options, the cast iron and enamel Aga also makes a powerful fashion statement.

“It’s less about ‘having it all’ and more about leading the life you want to lead,” says George. “Because we live, work and entertain in the kitchen, women want exceptional style and amenities that will give them comfort and pleasure there. Now, women can do this, in style.”

Since the company’s inception, George has helped women create their dream lives at home and continues to grow that vision today. This Fall, Domain will open the first of many larger format stores in Fair Oaks, Virginia and Princeton, New Jersey featuring fully-designed kitchens. The stores will include demonstration kitchens where customers can get hands-on experience cooking on an Aga range, as well as carry Domain’s full line of living, dining and bedroom furnishings.

Founded in 1985, Domain operates 25 retail stores from Boston to Washington, D.C. Domain became a subsidiary of British-based Aga Foodservice Group in March 2002. Well-loved for its decorator looks, fully-accessorized displays and classic European-style furnishings, Domain has won numerous industry and customer awards. George is a frequent public speaker and has personally won many prestigious awards such as Retailer of the Year.
