FLEET PROMOTES TO WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS IN MASSACHUSETTS A MAJOR NEW INITIATIVE BY THE WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS’ CONNECTION

Gloria Steinem, Judy George, and Marcia Ann Gillespie Lead Provocative Discussion. Occasion Coincides with ‘Best Practices’ Award by Milken Institute.

FleetBoston Financial illustrated its support of its recently announced $2 billion financing and investment initiative dedicated to women-owned businesses by launching its Massachusetts effort with a lively ‘thought leaders’ discussion today before several hundred attendees at the Boston Harbor Hotel.

Leading the interactive discussion were Gloria Steinem, Co-Founder Editor of Ms. magazine; Judy George, founder and CEO of Domain Home Fashions; and, Marcia Ann Gillespie, Editor in Chief of Ms. magazine. Teri Cavanagh, Director of the Women Entrepreneurs’ Connection and senior vice president at Fleet, a program devoted to helping ensure the growth of women-owned businesses, provided insights based upon her career of enabling women to grow their businesses.

"Today’s event hosted by the Women Entrepreneurs’ Connection tells women business owners and entrepreneurs that we recognize their contributions and want to be a catalyst and partner for their growth and future success. We intend to be the bank of choice for women-owned businesses in Massachusetts and throughout the Northeast," said Robert J. Higgins, President of Commercial and Retail Banking at Fleet.

The event coincides with the announcement yesterday by the Milken Institute that Fleet’s Women Entrepreneurs’ Connection was named a best practice among governmental and financial institutions for ". . . successfully increased access to credit for women entrepreneurs." It was the only independently operating bank named among six recipients.

The report, produced jointly by the Milken Institute and The National Women’s Business Council, both independent, non-partisan entities, ". . . recognizes what we have believed since the inception of the Women Entrepreneurs’ Connection — that access to capital is one of the most critical issues facing women business owners today. It also recognizes that The Connection is delivering that access," said Cavanagh.
